Thyroid Storm

Last Monday I was admitted at the Medical City hospital via ER due to Thyroid Storm. The symptoms started early morning of Sunday.. I was awaken by the urge of going to the bathroom, I had four visits before I was able to go back to sleep. When I woke up again (before noon) I already have a fever and tremors which I thought was due to my fever and diarrhea. All the time I have palpitations but I did not pay attention to it because I always have it once in a while. So I took 2 paracetamols and 1 antibiotic capsule and went back to sleep. In the afternoon, my husband insisted that we go to a doctor for a check-up, so we went to the Medical City satellite clinic which is located inside a mall in Marikina. Unfortunately the doctors were also on holiday, the Pediatrician was the only doctor available then so I decided to go back the next day and since we are already in the Mall and Janell is with us, we took her to a playroom so she could have fun then Jimmy and I went inside the department store to look around. While walking Jimmy keep on asking “Are you okay?, “Gusto mong umupo?”, “Napapagod ka na ba?” I said, “Ok lang ako, bakit ba ang kulit mo”. Jimmy replied, “Para kasing pagod ka na, para kang hinihingal eh. Umuwi na tayo.” And I answered, “Ayoko pang umuwi, hndi pa tapos si Janell eh.”, “ang bilis lang kasi ng heartbeat ko kaya ako hinihingal pero ok lang ako..”

The next day (Monday), instead of going back to the satellite clinic we went straight to the ER of the Medical City hospital to be sure that there will be a doctor available and that my health card will be covered. At that time I’m still suffering from diarrhea, tremors and palpitation. A simple check-up that I expected did not happen, after the doctor check my vital signs and condition, he calmly told me, “I will have you admitted today, if somebody is waiting for you outside I will ask the nurse to call them.” I could only answer, “huh?! Bakit po?” then the doctor told me, I have the symptoms of a thyroid attack and he needs to do tests to ensure his assumption. My heart rate was also fast that is above the normal range and needed to be monitored as I could have a cardiac arrest anytime.

Sabi nya, “Naku hndi pwede, that is against medical advise. You cannot go home yet.”

I stayed for seven hours in the emergency room before they let me transfer to a private room. I spent three days and two nights in the hospital. It would have been three nights if only I did not lie. I lied about my tremors and diarrhea. I told the doctor that it has stopped. So after many follow ups and several pangungulit the doctor finally agreed to let me go home. Yehey! But with several conditions, I will continue my medications at home and I will come back after a week.

Now I’m back to work, waiting to be stressed out again. Haha!
